A thrilling performance of Handel's sumptuous masterpiece, responsive to the work's opulence and its sensuous lyricism. Led by Sarah Connolly in the title role, the cast could scarcely be bettered today.

is now the one to own, and unless you're a collector of these things, the only one you'll need.

As he has proved in some notable Stravinsky recordings, Daniel Reuss is a stunning choral conductor.
In Handelian mode, he finds a similar vitality. [...] Reuss is responsive alike to the oratorio�s

The vitality and refinement of the Berlin Choir is always compelling. With terrific
controlled raucousness from antiphonal wind and brass, the opening chorus of Act 2 is as elementary thrilling

Where the earlier recordings each have at least one unsatisfactory soloist,
Reusss solo line-up could hardly be bettered. [...] if you want this magnificent work complete,
McCreesh's is the version to go for, while for consistently
glorious Handel singing the new Harmonia Mundi recording, impressively directed by Reuss, takes the palm.

Het wordt dus moeilijk kiezen tussen de drie bestaande uitgaven, temeer daar ze opnametechnisch niet voor
elkaar onderdoen. Gardiner en McCreesh geven elkaar weinig toe, want bij geen van beiden vallen zwakke
plekken aan te wijzen, noch vocaal, noch instrumentaal. En toch... voor zover nog mogelijk worden ze nu
door Daniel Reuss overtroffen. Deze Solomon bezit alle goede eigenschappen van de beide andere opnamen,
en heeft naar mijn smaak nog net dat ondefinieerbare méér: noem het affiniteit, noem het warmte,
noem het ontroering. Juist door de sterke concurrentie kan ik zeggen: voor mij is dit de definitieve Solomon.

Deze Solomon is een samenkomst van ideale omstandigheden. Het blijft helaas bij deze ene keer,
want uit het ijzersterke trio Rias-Akamus-Reuss is de laatste definitief verdwenen nu hij in Estland aan het
werk is gegaan. Met zijn eigen Cappella Amsterdam liet Daniel Reuss onlangs nog horen dat Händel hem op het
lijf is geschreven. Hij toont zich een meester van structuren,
